Welcome to Holywell Chess Club

About the Club

As of August 2016, we have 24 members. These range from beginners who are just learning the moves to medium standard League players. We include among our ranks juniors, ladies, pensioners and a few disabled persons. There is a definite advantage to being a small club - that is the need to help and rely on one another, much like comparing life in a small village to that in a large city.

This has been a factor in the rapid development of our junior graded players, who have reflected this in a remarkable season in both individual and team honours (see the news page).

Membership Costs

The adult cost of membership is £7.50 per annum. Junior membership (U16) is £5 per annum. For members wishing to play League and Tournament chess, there is an additional Welsh Chess Union registration fee of £12 per annum.. All fees are payable from 1st September of each year.

Where do we Meet?

At the Stamford Gate Hotel in Holywell. Club nights are every Monday evening (except Bank Holidays) commencing at 19:30.

Free Trial Offer

If you have never played but thought about doing so, don't consider yourself strong enough or you are just new to the area, it is a bit of a risk to join somewhere and find out it is not for you. So - we offer a FREE 1 month trial to anybody who would like to see if our club is for them. The trial will include games with - and tips from - experienced members in a relaxed and friendly manner, as well as assistance from the club's official coach.

Do you Want to Know More?

You can either contact our Secretary, Steve Williams, for an informal chat about us and what we can provide, or come along to a club night to see for yourself if this is for you. It is advisable to contact before turning up, just in case everyone is absent due to away match fixtures.

Introducing Some of our Members

Max Coventry

Max Coventry

Max is one of the top players in the club. He is a very experienced player, always willing to play weaker opponents (aren't we all?) and spends time going over their game afterwards, to encourage and improve their ability where he can. He is the current Club Champion and he is also a thoughtful and tactful administrator, which is one reason why he is not only club president, but is also President of the Chester & District Chess League!

Dewi Jones

Dewi Jones

Following a good performance over the 2014/5 season, Dewi was nominated for Chester & District League's “Most Improved Player of the Year”. He captains the “Knights” team for this current season, for whom he plays board 2. He is also the former Welsh Chess Union Grading Officer for all of North Wales.
